In the first tour months of 2006, the port of Mazatlan has handled a greater number of clients which has in turn had a favorable impact on the movement in the harbor. The following is a chart showing a statistical report for the total container tonnage operating from January to April:
Service Jan-April 2006 Jan-April 2005 Percentage Difference
Imports (tons) 36, 669.30 33,937.22 8.05%
Exports (tons) 31, 573.11 19,080.36 65.47%
It is worth mentioning that Mediterranean Shipping Company and CP Ships have maintained regular traffic in the harbor, doing both imports and exports.
We estimate that the present year will mark a taking off in the movement of containers in the port of Mazatlan which will greatly benefit local businesses who do commerce with exterior companies.
Mazatlan recently acquired a modern piece of equipment called a “Super Stacker” so as to more efficiently handle the growing number of containers. It has the capacity to load 5 full containers weighing up to 25 tons. This machine will also increase the efficiency of the enclosed controlled spaces where the containers are handled.
2005-2006 Cruise Ship Season Ends
The port of Mazatlan has intensely promoted the maintaining and improving of cruise ship traffic. Together with Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Hualtuco and Acapulco, a magazine was published that highlights the good points of these tourist destinations.
Traditionally, the high season of cruise ships is from October to May and so we can say that we are now at the end of another season. It was the best in a while. From January to April of 2006, 103 cruise ships arrived carrying 226, 938 passengers. Compare this with last year which saw 88 cruise ships arrive carrying 186, 039 passengers.
Since the cruise ship season is ending, the Mexican Riviera, the most traveled route in Mexico, will only be covered by the cruise ship Carnival Pride, which will continue to make weekly trips throughout the year. |
