Temple of St Joseph

210 Canizalez St. at the corner of Campana St, El Centro neighborhood, telephone: 981-3545

This is the oldest temple in town, dating from the beginning of the 19th century.  The Carmelites were the ones who were in charge of building it and over the years it has the distinction of retaining all of its original features and is still standing proud.  The precise dates of the construction are not known, but it is generally considered that work began in 1837 and was finished 5 years later.

If you compare this church to other Catholic churches you will find that it is much smaller.  This is because at the time of construction, Mazatlan was still a very small pueblo with less than 4,000 people living here and many of them were foreigners with other religious affiliations.
