Amigos-de-Mexico-Educacion.jpgMazatlan, June 3rd, 2008.- in a news conference yesterday, the civil association Friends of Mexico talked about the balance of the education programs that they have done in the marginal areas of town.  Their president, Murray Page and a select group of collaborators and association members held the conference.

It is important to mention that Friends of Mexico is a Mexican non profit civil organization that was founded back in 1999.  It is comprised of about 750 citizens of the USA and Canada who reside here either permanently or temporarily.

Murray Page pointed out that the only thing that the organization is looking for is to broaden its relationship with the Mazatlan community and to detect some necessities of the city and perhaps contribute to a solution to “make Mazatlan an even more pleasant place to live”.

Page revealed that through monthly meetings, the board of directors and committee organizers does a great variety of things, main among them promoting scholarships to students of marginal public schools.

The Grapevine June.14-08

Mazatlan.Cloduy-.jpgAre we in Seattle?
In case you hadn’t noticed, Mazatlan has seen cool weather, gray clouds and on and off drizzle since Wednesday, June 4th, adding up to more overcast days than we’ve seen all year- not that I am complaining! Soon we will surely see the return of the blazing sun that makes summertime in Maz such a memorable season.

Ironically, it is precisely during this unusual spell of cloudy weather (brought on courtesy of Tropical Storm Boris, the second of the year) that TV Azteca has been in town, filming some of the many charms and attractions of La Perla del Pacifico for an upcoming broadcast special showcasing Mazatlan as one of the 13 Marvels of Mexico. Narrated by distinguished actor Rodrigo Camacho, the show will feature footage of the Malecon, the Cathedral, the Marina, the Plazuela Machado, and other highlights of the Centro Historico and beyond, as well as covering the thriving cruise ship phenomenon and the new convention center which is undergoing construction. All that’s missing is the city’s trademark blue sky and sunshine, but maybe the graphic engineers can superimpose a more characteristic image over the cloud background. The program will air on Azteca 13 at 2 PM June 28th, so don’t forget to turn on and tune in.

sillas-rueda.jpgThe Grande Prairie Rotary Club is keeping up the good work that it has been doing for many years, giving its sister city Mazatlán more help on wheels. Two new ambulances, a fire truck and a school bus bring to a total of 27 the number of motorized vehicles that have been added to the local fleet. But wait, there’s more! 55 functioning wheel chairs made the long journey down, making life more mobile for dozens of needy residents. Another 45 wheelchairs are bound for southern Sinaloa areas, including Concordia, Rosario and Escuinapa. Also, there are a whole lot of clothing and toys to be distributed to orphans. And to bring the sister cities closer together, a direct Grande Prairie to Mazatlan charter flight is in the planning stages.

Two new gambling establishments have been approved by Mayor Jorge Abel Lopez and his cabinet. One has already opened on Avenida Ejercito Mexicano, with little fanfare, no liquor license and no ceremony, while a more ritzy, high profile casino is planned for the booming Marina area.

The grapevine April 15-08

Grapevine-Mercado-Playa.jpgMazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, April 15th 2008.- While springtime in most of North America is greeted with great joy, here in Mazatlan spring means the onset of the off season, as the flocks of snowbirds leave the tropics and wind their way northward. Canadians race to meet the six month deadline to keep their health insurance, and United Statesians have an April 15 deadline of their own to deal with. So the weather is perfect and the water is luscious, but the beaches are empty until the revival of national tourism in June.

Grapevine-Mercado-Pino-Suarez.jpgFortunately for local businesses, the booming cruise ship traffic keeps the coffers jingling by day, at least. As many as three of the floating giants may arrive the same day, flooding the streets with mostly mature, clean cut, affluent tourists (so who misses the spring breakers?)…..Vendors at the Pino Suarez central mercado report that on cruise ship days their sales remain constant, but on the off days sales fall to about half what they were last month…

What’s Shaking in Mazatlan Development?

Riu-Mazatlan-Construccion-000.jpgMazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico, April 14th 2008.- 1Hola Mazatlecens and welcomed visitors to Mazatlan! In this month’s buzz on real estate, we’ll do a quick fly-by on what’s shaking on the coast. There are some new big names in town which are definitely contributing to taking Mazatlan to yet another level in the international spotlight.

The biggest hitter in town right now is the ultra successful Riu Hotels and Resorts group of Spain. These lads are the real deal, and in case you haven’t seen the cement plant that they have established right on their construction site, you can drive up near to Emerald Bay along the Cerritos Beach and check it out – along with amazing construction progress.

In February of 2008, the company CEO, Mr. Luis Riu, announced that the company would begin construction on Hotel Riu Mazatlán. The all – inclusive hotel will be a 5-star beachfront resort with a total of 716 rooms, three specialty-themed restaurants, five bars and three conference rooms. The hotel will be open for business in May 2009.

Is that BIG news for Mazatlan or what?

The Mazatlan Grapevine

Enrique-Patron.JPGMazatlán’s most acclaimed musical prodigy, Enrique Patrón de Ruedas, reaffirmed his position as Mexico’s most distinguished orchestra conductor with his recent return to the prestigious Bellas Artes theater in Mexico City to once again conduct Puccini’s beloved opera Tosca, inaugurating an upcoming national tour. The last time he conducted Tosca there, in 1984, legendary Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo topped the bill. The Mazatlecan maestro has expressed his regrets that this production will not be coming to the Teatro Angela Peralta, but will visit the Sinaloa capital city of Culiacán April 10th and 11th. Said the famed musician, “Such masterpieces as Tosca will always be there, for they express with sounds the essences of human passions. As long as there are people on the planet they will seek the music which offers a marvelous mirror in which is reflected who we are and what we feel”.

El Fidecomiso???

» A lot of clients with whom I deal with initially think that they can not own property here in Mexico. Well, good news for us – this is not true!

By: Shaun Klynstra

Hola Mazatlecens and welcomed visitors to Mazatlan! In this month’s buzz on real estate, we will take a quick look at an extremely important topic that few people can pronounce correctly – the Fideicomiso.

A lot of clients with whom I deal with initially think that they can not own property here in Mexico. Well, good news for us – this is not true!

The Mexican Constitution states that foreigners can not own property inside of the restricted areas. These restricted areas are defined as any piece of property that is within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of the land border and 50 kilometers (31 miles) of the coastal zone. This law was designed to protect the Mexican land from foreign invasion.

Since the Mexican Constitution can not be altered in this respect, the Government established a system of land trusts, thus allowing foreigners to invest in property within the restricted zones. These trusts must be established with one of the main banks in Mexico.
