The Mazatlan Grapevine March 08

The Mazatlan Grapevine

By: Greg Brady

Enrique-Patron.JPGMazatlán’s most acclaimed musical prodigy, Enrique Patrón de Ruedas, reaffirmed his position as Mexico’s most distinguished orchestra conductor with his recent return to the prestigious Bellas Artes theater in Mexico City to once again conduct Puccini’s beloved opera Tosca, inaugurating an upcoming national tour. The last time he conducted Tosca there, in 1984, legendary Spanish tenor Plácido Domingo topped the bill. The Mazatlecan maestro has expressed his regrets that this production will not be coming to the Teatro Angela Peralta, but will visit the Sinaloa capital city of Culiacán April 10th and 11th. Said the famed musician, “Such masterpieces as Tosca will always be there, for they express with sounds the essences of human passions. As long as there are people on the planet they will seek the music which offers a marvelous mirror in which is reflected who we are and what we feel”.

El Fidecomiso???

» A lot of clients with whom I deal with initially think that they can not own property here in Mexico. Well, good news for us – this is not true!

By: Shaun Klynstra

Hola Mazatlecens and welcomed visitors to Mazatlan! In this month’s buzz on real estate, we will take a quick look at an extremely important topic that few people can pronounce correctly – the Fideicomiso.

A lot of clients with whom I deal with initially think that they can not own property here in Mexico. Well, good news for us – this is not true!

The Mexican Constitution states that foreigners can not own property inside of the restricted areas. These restricted areas are defined as any piece of property that is within 100 kilometers (62 miles) of the land border and 50 kilometers (31 miles) of the coastal zone. This law was designed to protect the Mexican land from foreign invasion.

Since the Mexican Constitution can not be altered in this respect, the Government established a system of land trusts, thus allowing foreigners to invest in property within the restricted zones. These trusts must be established with one of the main banks in Mexico.

Estrella del Mar Dif Donation

J. Patrick Butler, honored as Executive of the Year 2006 by the Mexicali Association of Sales and Marketing Executives for his contribution to the community of San Felipe, Baja California, pointed out that Mazatlan is going through a takeoff which is owed in a large part to its great attractions.  Among these are its climate, people, beaches, food and culture.  He put a special emphasis on the Historic Center, about which he said “this area of Mazatlan gives it a big distinction over its competitors

Dif-Estrella-Mar-Donativo.jpgMazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, February 21, 2008.- Yesterday morning in the DIF offices of Mazatlan, a donation was given by J. The delivery of the 68, 250.00 dollar check was made in the office of Perla Sarmiento de Lopez who received the check in her hands and thanks the good will of Estrella del Mar for supporting the DIF programs in Mazatlan.

This donation is a percentage of what was raised in the third International Charity and Celebrity Golf Tournament held last January 5, 6 and 7 at Estrella del Mar.

The tournament was held to raise funds for education and so Mr. Butler asked Mrs. Perla to focus part of the money from the check on education and another part on the Virtual Babies program.

Secret Recipes: Menudo A La Sinaloa

My Mother-in-law’s Secret Recipes: Menudo a la Sinaloa

by Gregorio Brady
(culinary espionage agent)

menudo (1).JPGMazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Febrary 21th., 2008.- (Patient reader, I know we promised duck pozole for this edition, but, for latitudinal reasons, maybe mañana...) On the bright side, we instead offer possibly the most sacred of all her recipes: menudo. Every Mazatlan colonia has a few houses that make up a big pot of homemade menudo each Saturday afternoon/ evening, to be ready for the steady Sunday morning stream of family and neighbors carrying plastic buckets to be filled with the classic traditional Mexican good-for-what-ails-ya-especially-a-hangover stew. My dear mother-in-law is a transplanted Jalisco hillbilly and tends to prefer the Jalisco way of doing things, but after many years of cooking menudo on a weekly basis for the locals, she has come around more to a Sinaloan style of menudo manufacture, which she achieves as follows:

Go to the mercado and buy:

The Mazatlan Grapevine February 08

The Mazatlan Grapevine
By: Greg Brady

ex-vanadito-mazatlan-.JPGMazatlan, Sinaloa, México, February, 1th. 2008.- Every year at Carnival time, one of the highlights of the entertainment spectacles is the traditional roast, that is, the burning in effigy of the year’s most distinguished villain(s), dubbed el mal humor, sort of like “the evil spirit”. This year’s representative of the incarnation of iniquity is: the band of inebriated rascals who last summer had the audacity to lasso Mazatlan’s beloved Deer Statue (remember, Mazatlán is an indigenous word meaning “land of the deer”, and, believe it or not, there are still little deers lurking around not too far off the beaten paths), tear it down from its pedestal and drag it with their pick-up truck through the streets, irreparable damaging it! The local police hunted them down at their Golden Zone hotel, and found incriminating evidence indicating that these rowdies from rival city Culiacán were the guilty culprits. It turned out to be a very expensive prank for them, and now they will burn in infamy on Carnaval Saturday, joining the ranks of past villains such as Osama Bin Laden and Monica Lewinsky.  The good news is that the original artist/ sculptor has since recreated a larger, maybe even better version of the Deer, and it now graces its old roost on Avenida Olas Altas (in front of the offices of your humble servants at Sinaloa Interactivo).

The Real Buzz in Mazatlan Real Estate

“What’s New in the New Year?”

Shaun-Klynstra.jpgMazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Jenuary 23th,. Hola Mazatlecos and visitors to Mazatlan! Thanks for picking up this fine publication and for taking the time to read what I have to say. My name is Shaun Klynstra, a sales associate at RE/MAX Sunset Eagle which is located in the Golden Zone. The real estate industry in Mazatlan sure has come a long way in these past few years!

Originally from Western Canada, I first came down to Mazatlan seven years ago and have seen this town really grow into what we are seeing today. It is a very exciting time to be involved in real estate right now, and the objective of this column is to share with you what I have learnt and continue to learn about real estate in Mazatlan and in Mexico.

This column is going to be focused on local real estate and all of the topics associated with it – I will do my best to provide readers with useful information – whether you are thinking of buying or selling some real estate, in the process of buying or selling, looking at renting, considering building or developing, doing some renovations, or have already bought your piece of paradise and want to share your experiences with the readers!

I would like to encourage readers to email me any questions or topics related to real estate that you would like have discussed in this column or addressed on a more personal basis, and would also like to invite all of you to share your opinions, tips and personal experiences with me.

My Mother-in-law’s Secret Recipes

My Mother-in-law’s Secret Recipes
G Brady

Secret-Recipes.jpgMazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Jenuary 19th 2008.- My dear sweet mother- in-law, La Suegrita, has raised eight healthy children, cooking for them on a daily basis, until now they are well into their thirties, with no end in sight. She is an expert practitioner of the traditional Jalisco school of vittles. I am constantly amazed at the variety of elaborate, time consuming, labor- intensive, delicious, nutritious, and, above all, thrifty dishes she turns out on a daily basis. So when Hector and Sandra gave me the opportunity to launch a new column, I thought: how about cashing in on this treasure trove of lore! La Suegrita graciously yielded to my pleas and has, perhaps a bit reluctantly, consented to reveal some of her secrets.

My first suggestion was: duck pozole. You haven’t lived until you have tried my mother- in- law’s duck pozole. So I made an appointment for ten or eleven last Sunday morning, when we all gather at her nearby house for menudo (future recipe number three, I promise!), with the intention of interviewing her and coaxing her into revealing the ingredients and so forth. Well, as is often the case, my plan did not happen. Strolling down the lane I spied La Suegrita walking hand in hand with my darling daughter, who is suffering greatly from the ongoing “cold spell”. They were on their way in search of “petroleo” for her respiratory ailment. So, instead of duck pozole, we present the following cough remedy (which I must admit undeniably alleviated her bronchial suffering, where commercial cough syrups had failed; believe it or not!)

a60c8cdda225d332ede077520305c28b.jpgThe first of the year 2008 saw the entry of the new mayor, Jorge Abel Sanchez Lopez, and his incoming administrative team. Jorge Abel, as he likes to be called, is not only known as el alcalde, or mayor, he also bears the title of el presidente municipal, that is, president of the greater Mazatlan municipality, akin to a county, which includes Villa Union to the south and La Noria to the north, also many outlying ranchos, rural settlements, such as the birthplace of banda music, El Recodo.

Jose-luis-Franco-Gonzalez-Cultura-Mazatlan-.jpgThe popular Jorge Abel’s appointee to the office of Director of the Municipal Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art is José Luis Franco Rodríguez, alias Pepe Franco, who is a well known local writer, professor of literature and progenitor of the annual springtime book fair La Feria de Libros. He is faced with the Herculean task of managing this year’s Carnaval, one of the world’s largest, on very short notice: it starts exceptionally early this year, on January 31st. He remains confident that it can be done, saying, “We are going to have a good Carnaval, we are advancing at the pace of a forced march, but we have a team that works very well together, so everything will be fine, just like other years.”

6644d898fdafbe8dd509c3c243c8e5b4.jpgA good sign of more cooperation in the future between Mazatlan and the Governor Jesus Aguilar’s office in Culiacan: his first week in charge, Jorge Abel asked for and received a hefty loan from the State of Sinaloa to help defray civic operating expenses until the municipal treasury revives from the transition of power. Explains Jorge Abel, “We showed the Governor the real situation in Mazatlan with respect to finances, and we were assured by the State government that it would advance the necessary funds to meet the more urgent outlays, such as workers’ salaries and payments to providers.” Maybe having a Mayor who belongs to the PRI, the same political party that has long held the Governor’s office, will bring more blessings our way.

Various international celebrities were in attendance, including Emmy award winning actor Gordon Clapp of NYPD Blue, comedienne/ actress Kate Flannery of TV series The Office, and professional golfer Kim Kouwabunpat, winner of 4 US junior titles.

After a sumptuous breakfast, attendees gathered on the lawn before a breathtaking panorama of secluded beach, swaying palms and emerald green landscapes. Owner/partner Pat Butler led off the ceremonies, thanking all those working to make it happen. He then introduced Mazatlan's new mayor Jorge Abel López Sanchez, who drew a round of laughter with his expressions of appreciation for the continuing investments in the local economy.
