The Real Buzz in Mazatlan Real Estate
“What’s New in the New Year?”
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Jenuary 23th,. Hola Mazatlecos and visitors to Mazatlan! Thanks for picking up this fine publication and for taking the time to read what I have to say. My name is Shaun Klynstra, a sales associate at RE/MAX Sunset Eagle which is located in the Golden Zone. The real estate industry in Mazatlan sure has come a long way in these past few years!
Originally from Western Canada, I first came down to Mazatlan seven years ago and have seen this town really grow into what we are seeing today. It is a very exciting time to be involved in real estate right now, and the objective of this column is to share with you what I have learnt and continue to learn about real estate in Mazatlan and in Mexico.
This column is going to be focused on local real estate and all of the topics associated with it – I will do my best to provide readers with useful information – whether you are thinking of buying or selling some real estate, in the process of buying or selling, looking at renting, considering building or developing, doing some renovations, or have already bought your piece of paradise and want to share your experiences with the readers!
I would like to encourage readers to email me any questions or topics related to real estate that you would like have discussed in this column or addressed on a more personal basis, and would also like to invite all of you to share your opinions, tips and personal experiences with me.

My Mother-in-law’s Secret Recipes |
My Mother-in-law’s Secret Recipes
G Brady
Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, Jenuary 19th 2008.- My dear sweet mother- in-law, La Suegrita, has raised eight healthy children, cooking for them on a daily basis, until now they are well into their thirties, with no end in sight. She is an expert practitioner of the traditional Jalisco school of vittles. I am constantly amazed at the variety of elaborate, time consuming, labor- intensive, delicious, nutritious, and, above all, thrifty dishes she turns out on a daily basis. So when Hector and Sandra gave me the opportunity to launch a new column, I thought: how about cashing in on this treasure trove of lore! La Suegrita graciously yielded to my pleas and has, perhaps a bit reluctantly, consented to reveal some of her secrets.
My first suggestion was: duck pozole. You haven’t lived until you have tried my mother- in- law’s duck pozole. So I made an appointment for ten or eleven last Sunday morning, when we all gather at her nearby house for menudo (future recipe number three, I promise!), with the intention of interviewing her and coaxing her into revealing the ingredients and so forth. Well, as is often the case, my plan did not happen. Strolling down the lane I spied La Suegrita walking hand in hand with my darling daughter, who is suffering greatly from the ongoing “cold spell”. They were on their way in search of “petroleo” for her respiratory ailment. So, instead of duck pozole, we present the following cough remedy (which I must admit undeniably alleviated her bronchial suffering, where commercial cough syrups had failed; believe it or not!)

The Mazatlan Grapevine
By: Greg Brady
The first of the year 2008 saw the entry of the new mayor, Jorge Abel Sanchez Lopez, and his incoming administrative team. Jorge Abel, as he likes to be called, is not only known as el alcalde, or mayor, he also bears the title of el presidente municipal, that is, president of the greater Mazatlan municipality, akin to a county, which includes Villa Union to the south and La Noria to the north, also many outlying ranchos, rural settlements, such as the birthplace of banda music, El Recodo.
The popular Jorge Abel’s appointee to the office of Director of the Municipal Institute of Culture, Tourism and Art is José Luis Franco Rodríguez, alias Pepe Franco, who is a well known local writer, professor of literature and progenitor of the annual springtime book fair La Feria de Libros. He is faced with the Herculean task of managing this year’s Carnaval, one of the world’s largest, on very short notice: it starts exceptionally early this year, on January 31st. He remains confident that it can be done, saying, “We are going to have a good Carnaval, we are advancing at the pace of a forced march, but we have a team that works very well together, so everything will be fine, just like other years.”
A good sign of more cooperation in the future between Mazatlan and the Governor Jesus Aguilar’s office in Culiacan: his first week in charge, Jorge Abel asked for and received a hefty loan from the State of Sinaloa to help defray civic operating expenses until the municipal treasury revives from the transition of power. Explains Jorge Abel, “We showed the Governor the real situation in Mazatlan with respect to finances, and we were assured by the State government that it would advance the necessary funds to meet the more urgent outlays, such as workers’ salaries and payments to providers.” Maybe having a Mayor who belongs to the PRI, the same political party that has long held the Governor’s office, will bring more blessings our way.

Various international celebrities were in attendance, including Emmy award winning actor Gordon Clapp of NYPD Blue, comedienne/ actress Kate Flannery of TV series The Office, and professional golfer Kim Kouwabunpat, winner of 4 US junior titles.
After a sumptuous breakfast, attendees gathered on the lawn before a breathtaking panorama of secluded beach, swaying palms and emerald green landscapes. He then introduced Mazatlan's new mayor Jorge Abel López Sanchez, who drew a round of laughter with his expressions of appreciation for the continuing investments in the local economy.
Austrian actor/ body builder (and portrayer of lookalike Arnold Schwarzenegger in the A & E movie See Arnold Run) called Mazatlan, "an amazing place" and vowed, "I vill be coming back here!". Kate Flannery noted that, "Mazatlan is no stranger to a good party!" and added that it was wonderful to be able to have a great party and help a worthy cause at the same time. Actress Paula Trickey, a regular on Pacific Blue for five seasons, mentioned that she appears in some thirty celebrity golf tournaments per year, but that the Estrella del Mar was her favorite. "It's a great course!" Chris Rich of Murphy Brown apologized for his Spanish, adding, "Golf is a universal language, but I don't speak it either." Polish beauty queen/gymnast/actress Eva Halina, who has appeared on Friends and The Dream Team, praised the loveliness of the grounds and the friendliness of the people. Mazatlan 6 reasons to retire here |
The foundations of the Mazatlán Lifestyle are warmth, nearness and affordability
“Whether you are young and single and love the party scene or a more mature, family oriented person, Mazatlan´s warm weather and equally warm people will light up your soul while you experience quality living at prices well below major U.S. and Canadian cities… and certainly at a fraction of the cost of Hawaii or the beaches of California, Florida or the Caribbean. “Enjoy so much, but peso little.”
Not so far away from home
Mazatlan is relatively close to the border. You can drive to Nogales (or vice-versa) in 12 hours, although leisurely motorists tend to stop overnight halfway. By bus it´s 16 hours. By air, it´s a scant 2 hours to Phoenix or Houston, 2 ½ hours to Los Angeles, less than 3 to Denver or Salt Lake City. All those are hubs for further travel on Mexicana, America West, Continental, AeroMexico, Alaska, Delta, Frontier—the airlines that serve Mazatlan.
Enjoy the weather all year round
Being just 15 miles south of the Tropic of Cancer, Mazatlan is in the same latitudes as the Hawaiian Islands and the southern Bahamas. Enjoy tropical conditions with dry, moderate winters and warm, wet summers. The average temperature year round is 77*F.
